Lower Back Pain Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment

The lower back is an intricate structure of interconnected and overlapping elements:

  • Tendons and muscles and other soft tissues
  • Highly sensitive nerves and nerve roots that travel from the lower back down into the legs and feet
  • Small and complex joints

An irritation or problem with any of these structures can cause lower back pain and/or pain that radiates or is referred to other parts of the body. Pain from resultant lower back muscle spasms can be severe, and pain from a number of syndromes can become chronic.

While lower back pain is extremely common, the symptoms and severity of lower back pain vary greatly. A simple lower back muscle strain might be excruciating enough to necessitate an emergency room visit, while a degenerating disc might cause only mild, intermittent discomfort.

Identifying the symptoms, along with an accurate diagnosis of the underlying cause of the pain, is the first step in obtaining effective pain relief.

Back Pain and Constipation
Not A Good Combination - 2
In addition to an elevated temperature, there are some other things to think about when considering why the back pain and constipation might be occurring. Is the stomach or abdomen area almost sore and sensitive to touch? Have you had diarrhea recently that was bloody or had a red tint to it? Any time you vomit blood or have a blackened stool (this is blood in the stool), you might want to get to the emergency room because the back pain and constipation are merely small factors in a much larger problem.
In addition to having the back pain and constipation, a person with an elevated temperature and evidence of blood in the vomit or stool is very sick

A friend just got back from a holiday ski trip

by AlaskaHeart

A friend just got back from a holiday ski trip to Utah with the kind of story that warms the cockles of anybody's heart. Conditions were perfect, 12 below, no feeling in the toes, basic numbness all over. The "Tell me when we're having fun" kind of day.
One of the women in the group complained to her husband that she was in dire need of a restroom. He told her not to worry, that he was sure there was relief at the top of the lift in the form of a powder room for female skiers in distress. He was wrong, of course, and the pain did not go away.
If you've ever had nature hit its panic button in you, then you know That a temperature of 12 below zero doesn't help matters

Wow. Stories like this make me appreciate pain

When I taught science and we'd talk about the nervous system, sometimes kids would ask why we experience pain. I'd explain to them that it is a very useful and protective adaptation to have. Otherwise, how would you know if something you are doing is causing injury to your body?
There was an article in the NYTimes magazine awhile back about a girl who could not feel pain (there are a few genetic conditions that cause this, I believe). Some people walk around with broken limbs, etc. without knowing it.
I hope you heal quickly!

Pain is always there, right under the surface...

The trick is to not dwell in yesterday. There is nothing we can do to change what has happened, we don't own the past. But we do have control over the here and now, and with that we can control our tomorrow and our destiny, to some extent. You have just graduated from college! That pain of losing your father to the "death like no other" never does go away, but ya do get real used to it. I imagine another death just reopens all those questions, "What's it all about, what's it all about, what's it all about?" You are only human, LinaMae, and everything you are feeling is only normal, and you are not alone, by any means
