Back pain from cancer

The Bark and the Bite of Low Back Pain

Is your back just barking? Or is there a bite in there?

The bark of low back pain is usually much worse than its bite, and this is the most important thing that most people need to understand about back pain, most of the time. The importance of things like herniated discs is usually exaggerated, most back pain goes away on it’s own (even “chronic” low back pain), and most patients are much better off if they feel confident about this. The power of justified, rational confidence is one of the pillars of my comprehensive low back pain tutorial.

However, there are rare cases of low back pain that have alarming causes. Low back pain can be an early warning sign of cancer or an autoimmune disease, for instance; or it may be associated with spinal cord damage. How can you tell? This is a concise, readable field guide to more worrisome low back symptoms — symptoms that need better-safe-than-sorry investigation with your doctor. It is basically just a plain English translation of authoritative clinical guidelines for doctors, such as those published by the American College of Physicians.

In other words, this article explains the difference between “dangerous” and “merely painful.”

Don’t confuse threat and risk. Working at the edge is a risk. But then again, so is walking out your front door.

Chronic low back pain is serious, but rarely ominous

Back pain can be a terrible curse. It can suck the joy out of your days for years or even decades. It can definitely be “serious.” I have worked with many truly miserable chronic low back pain patients over the years.

But chronic low back pain has never killed anyone.

Cue Jaws theme music. “Ominous” is medical jargon for “truly scary.” Low back pain is ominous when it is caused by a spinal cord trauma, or a progressive disease that can maim or kill. Ominous causes of low back pain are very rare, fortunately, but they are real. Awful things do happen. Some examples are coming below, like the sad but informative story of actor Andy Whitfield (Spartacus).

Lower Back Pain Pt. 1

by smwalker

As I mention before mine was back pain. This was about once a month I would have such shooting pain in my back I would be bed ridden and have to miss work. When able, I would go to our local park because they had these benches that had curved backs on them and I would put my stomach on the back of them and lean over to relive stress in my lower back (probably looked like someone passed out over the bench). The pain would eventually go away but from then on I would be afraid to do anything physical as I was in the mode of babying my back. I became a victim of my back.
This went on for about 5 years during this time I cared for my dad with alshimers, my mom through lung cancer, and I started a job with one of the big three auto makers after college as a supervisor in one of their...

Cancer is painful, and it can obviously come back many times
even if somehow it's cured.. the cure can cause problems that are also a slow painful death (chemotherapy)
and even if none of that applies... they could still have a slow painful death from something else
i've known people who got lung cancer just because they grew up with their parents smoking... nothing they could prevent

Marijuana and its anti-tumor fighting capabilities.
The original passage, which was published on March 17, read:
The potential benefits of medicinal Cannabis for people living with cancer include antiemetic effects, appetite stimulation, pain relief, and improved sleep. In the practice of integrative oncology, the health care provider may recommend medicinal Cannabis not only for symptom management but also for its possible direct antitumor effect.
The amended version reads:

Just one opinion from someone in pain

First - be very very glad you have a dr. concerned with your pain and trying to treat it. I have been in agony 3 months with a back problem and I just went to a dr. who said he did not believe in pain medication. I guess I will have to go to the ER and pay 600 dollars for 10 pills all the time.
Ok that being said...I would talk to your doctor ..of course and then only take what you need. I mean if you are in so much pain you cannot funtion then what is the point of not taking it? You may as well take the prescription that day and live your life. i am assuming you have good and bad days

50 and in pain

by pschewriter

I hope you post again. Your life sounds a lot like mine. I'm 52 on disability. I filed SSDI when I was 40. I went to college hoping I would get off of it. That hasn't happened yet. My youngest son is married and in the military. My mother died at age 56 from cancer. My oldest son is a serial killer that you will never hear about. He's in prison where he belongs. They are like night and day. One like me, the other like his dad who died 4 years ago. I grew up in Payton Place too. Most of us do.............some of us move away never to return. I hope my son never moves back. I want him to have the life I didn't get
